While other alarm companies may offer a $99 "special" or something similar, they aren't telling you what's so special about it.  Usually, you have to sign a 3 to 5 year monitoring contract at $35 or more per month just for basic monitoring over a phone line.  That's just for the basic alarm system, which usually includes 2 door contacts, 1 motion detector, and 1 keypad.  Every additional device typically raises your monthly rate, because in most cases, the alarm company retains ownership of the alarm system; you are just leasing it.  So if you decide to cancel your monitoring service with them, they can come rip out "their" alarm equipment.
